Like other representatives of the genus, the Cordyceps Chinese fruit body consists of two parts - from the stroma and from the sclerotia. The stroma is dark brown or black, more rarely yellowish. Its length is 4-10 centimeters, and the girth does not exceed 5 millimeters.
Leg bare, slim, ribbed. It ends with a spindle-shaped or club-shaped granular head. The taste of the mushroom is sweetish, and the smell is gentle and pleasant.

This mushroom propagates with spores, but surprisingly, it shoots spores, as if from a homing weapon, only at a time when there is a caterpillar of the kind of thin-hop hop moths nearby.
The spores are first glued to the body of the caterpillar, and then dissolve its skin and penetrate inside. In the body of the caterpillar the spores remain at rest until it begins to burrow into the ground to pupate in winter.
Caterpillars infected with the fungus are always buried in the ground, head upwards, like "soldiers". As soon as the caterpillar ends up in the ground, the spores enter into an active form, they begin to germinate, and after a while the caterpillar completely eats away. The body of the caterpillar is mummified and completely filled with sclerocymia.
The root grows from the spore, and the body of the fungus grows from it. Cordyceps Chinese sprouts from a caterpillar in late spring or early summer. The mushroom looks like a blade of grass. The growing fruit body uses nutrients from the body of the larva as food.
