Giant Puffball / Langermannia gigantea (Calvatia gigantea) is a giant among raincoats, round mushroom without foot reaches a diameter of 10 cm and a weight of 10 kg! The flesh or gleba at the beginning of growth is white, elastic, after maturation is vatopodobny, friable, pale green or brown. The leg is white, thick, cylindrical, may thicken or taper to the ground, in many species the leg is short, others may grow up to 15 - 20 cm. The surface of the cap may be smooth or rough, when cracked, pieces of unequal shape with torn edges are formed.
The characteristic distinguishing feature is that during the ripening the fruit body cracks almost completely and disappears. Spores of the fungus have a brown tint.
For cooking use only young mushrooms with white, dense, elastic flesh.
The fruit body is rounded, with a diameter of up to 0.5 m, slightly crushed from above. The leg is short, barely noticeable under the massive head. The young mushroom white flesh, elastic, when ripe yellows, becomes loose, then acquires a brown tint.
Golovach giant becomes brown after full maturation, then the shell breaks almost completely, exposing the inner part with spores.
In cooking, they use only young, fresh heads with white flesh. This differs from the mushroom champignon and other representatives who calmly withstand long-term storage in the cold.
Golovach giant, baggy and oblong, unlike other mushrooms, does not require pre-boiling. It is used for frying, baking and soups. Prepare, like other mushrooms that do not require pre-heat treatment.
Golovach giant is widely used in folk and traditional medicine. For the preparation of various drugs and medicines use only fully matured specimens. This type of fungus has antioxidant, anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and hemostatic properties. Apply ripened spores or thin layers of golubach. For cuts, the wound is sprinkled with spore powder or a thin layer of pulp is applied. Also used to treat laryngitis, smallpox, urticaria.
